Conditional fields are available when creating referral information fields or organizational questions in IRIS. Only admins are able to add or edit questions.

Adding Questions Overview

The Questions section of the IRIS admin site allows you to add new questions to an existing, or new Community. This is typically only done at the direction of Local Leaders. For more information on how to add questions, please see the IRIS Admin Manual.


Creating Conditional Fields

When creating a new question in IRIS, they can be conditional fields that branch from other questions formatted as dropdowns, multi-select, and check box fields.   However, ‘Dropdown’ is the suggested starter field.  

 

All conditional field questions assigned to a Community will display on sent referrals. This mirrors how IRIS currently functions (all questions appear on referrals regardless of if they've been answered) but, depending on the number of conditional fields, the appearance can be cluttered. An implication to be mindful of when designing fields.  

If the conditional field is an upload file, the file does not link on the org profile card, but it does link if it’s a referral information field.  Both multi-select and check boxes allow users to select multiple responses. This format is appropriate if the question supports the user making multiple selections of which one or more require conditional question.


Conditional Fields Design Guidelines

  • Conditional fields can be any field type.  

  • Multiple conditional fields can branch from one initial question. (In other words, if Response A, then display Questions C and D. If Response B, then display Questions E, F and G.)  


  • Conditional fields cannot also function as initial questions; meaning, conditional fields cannot branch from a conditional field.   


  • Both the initial question and conditional fields can be required. 


  • The Organization Details (Org Profile) does not support initial questions branching to Upload File fields. (The system allows this formatting, but any uploaded files won’t appear as links on the Org Profile card.)   


  • It is not possible to “reuse” questions. If more than one conditional field branches to the same question label/type, a new question must be created for each instance. (Note: IRIS will allow you to reuse questions (no error messages are thrown) but it will break the RIF.)
